Through a couple of years of iterations and drafts, finally the conclusion for an Infernal Affairs design has been reached. I wanted to do something special and something different with this design: the DOUBLE FEATURE
The original theatrical release of Infernal Affairs was December 2002, which marks the recent 20th anniversary of this film. Anecdotally, I actually saw this movie in college, a year after its initial Hong Kong release. The complexity of the storyline had my friends and I really invested in this film. For the uninitiated, this film was later adapted by Martin Scorsese in 2006 as The Departed, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture as well as Academy Award for Best Director, Scorsese’s first and only Oscar in his career, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Its a bit ironic that Infernal Affairs never seemed to get the same recognition The Departed got from critics but we know that in the end, its the audience that counts. With a more select audience knowing about Infernal Affairs makes it more of a IYKYK piece of cinema. Don’t get me wrong, The Departed was an incredible film, but wanted to give credit to Infernal Affairs and hopefully in turn introduces this movie to those who have never heard of or seen it.
The front of the tee is an original collage, a rearrangement of various movie poster elements from Infernal Affairs featuring Lau Kin-ming (Andy Lau) and Chan Wing-yan (Tony Leung). The design is 2 colors, white and jade green.
The back of the tee is an homage to The Departed from which adapts its story from Infernal Affairs. The bootleg volume gets turned up a little here straying far from movie posters. The only real reference to movie posters are the line breaks of the words and repetition of the usage “The Departed”.
The rest of the movie poster concept gets thrown out the window here. The design of the The Departed does feature the iconic rooftop scene depicted in both movies but better executed in Infernal Affairs.
The background scenery in this design features one of Boston’s biggest tourist traps: Quincy Market. True to bootleg form, a bootlegger might just simply image search Boston as it is the setting for The Departed. Both images of Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio are actually from different films but seemingly fit well here and might pass to the casual film fan on first glance.
