One of the earliest memories I’ve had with movies were our long famliy treks out to the city to visit the Asian music and movie shop. My parents would rent various series, usually Chinese or Korean dramas that were dubbed into Vietnamese. There would be at least 20+ VHS cassette tapes sent home in repurposed grocery bags. My folks would watch them nightly, often staying up past when I’d fall asleep. I’d remember them eating pickled fruits, the oscillating table fan to keep us cool in our un-air conditioned home. The warmth of the whole experience. I look back on the memories fondly into what would set the tone for the rest of my cinematic journey. One of the series I remember vividly is the Legend of the Condor Heroes or Anh Hung Xa Dieu as I remembered which was a kung fu action romance drama series. This one is a bit obscure but really was a memory unlock, and hope it reminds you of a childhood memory that you hold so fondly yourself.
We had this exact fan. I remember talking into it to distort my voice like Darth Vader.
Hopefully with these photos, you remember all the sights and smells.
