To say Rufio was an icon as a massive understatement. Hook was originally released on December 11th, 1991. That was 30 years ago! WTH?! It goes without saying, as an Asian American kid it was fantastic to see Rufio played by Dante Basco a Filipino American. Rufio’s character was so easy to identify with because of who I was, but also who I wanted to be. Strong, rebellious, and a leader. The fascination with the character Rufio extends greatly from bands to celebrities in costume, inspired by the leader of the Lost Boys.
Dante’s character was original to the film and his presence on set shows how much of a cultural icon he would go on to be.
Here Dante gifting Robin a 13607 1/2 which was the address he grew up at and his crew inspired by the Dead Poet’s Society.
Dustin, Dante and Robin on set. These cast hats are fire, wonder what the Rufio hat would have looked like!?
In celebration of 30 years of Hook and Dante’s character Rufio breaking down more barriers for Asian Americans is this mini capsule Hook cast tee and Rufio tee illustrated by the talented Louie Chin.
